What’s the Best Temperature Setting for Your Thermostat?

studio shot of modern thermostatIt doesn’t matter whether the topic surrounds heaters or air conditioners, there’s always one question that we get when it comes to HVAC and it’s “what is the best temperature setting for your thermostat?” We’re here to answer this. We know everything there is to know when it comes to air conditioning in New Haven, CT.

We’ve worked in the area for over 35 years. If you ever have questions about your air conditioner or even your heater, you can easily get in touch with our team members. We’re prepared to keep your home in the best shape possible.

What’s the Best Setting?

When we’re talking about the “best” thermostat setting, we’re talking about the most energy-efficient thermostat setting.

For Spring and Summer

This is the time of year that’s relevant now, so we’re going to start with this. When it comes to warm weather, the best temperature setting is about 78 degrees.

If you plan on taking a vacation, we suggest raising your thermostat to an even higher temperature. This is only relevant if you have house plants or things that need a little cooling to stay at a constant while you’re away. If you’re leaving an empty house, you can turn the thermostat off altogether.

For Fall and Winter

During the fall and winter, we recommend that you drop your thermostat setting down about ten degrees to 68 degrees. During this time of year, you can drop your thermostat setting even lower by about 10-15 degrees overnight if this is comfort for you. Doing this for about eight hours every night can reduce your energy bills by up to 15%.

A Bonus Tip

One thing that we want you to keep in mind is that it’s never a good idea to choose an extreme temperature. This isn’t going to help your home cool off or get warmer any faster. What it’s actually doing is forcing your HVAC system to work harder to yield the same results. It’s not a wise decision anyway. Think about it, how long are you really going to be comfortable at that 60 degree temperature during the summer season. It’s a little too cold even for the hottest days that we have in our area.

Improving Your Overall Home Efficiency

Would you like to improve your home’s efficiency no matter what temperature you choose? This is when you should consider upgrading your thermostat altogether. Older, analog thermostats just aren’t going to cut it anymore. A smart or Wi-Fi thermostat is what you need to make sure that you’re getting precise control over your home.
